Earl Jesse Coan, 66, of China Spring, died Saturday in Ellis County.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home Chapel, the Rev. Ron Durham officiating. Burial will be in China Spring Cemetery.

Mr. Coan was born in Comanche County and attended schools there. He moved to Waco in the early 1930s and joined the Waco Police Department in 1939. He served in the US Navy from 1941-1945. After returning to the Police Department, he was a patrol officer, a vice squad officer, sergeant of the vice squad and control lieutenant. He retired in 1965 after 20 years on the force.

Mr. Coan had owned and operated Waco Rug and Carpet Co. since 1946. He was a Mason and a Shriner, and a member of Columbus Avenue Baptist Church.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Maggie O’Neal of Deleon; three sons, Coleman Ray Coan of Jacksonville, Florida, Donald Bryan Coan of Dallas, Samuel Lee Coan of Austin; three daughters, Beverly Ann Coan of Dallas, Jessica Elaine Coan of Hewitt, and Alyssa Susanne Coan of Waco; three brothers, C. W. Coan of Waco, Lloyd Coan of Eastland and Doyle O’Neal; three sisters, Mrs. Ira Cogburn of New York City and Mrs. R. D.  (Lera) Walker and Mrs. Delbert (Bernice) Ottwell, both of Deleon; and two grandchildren.
