John J. (Jake) Talbert, 81, of Oak Leaf, a China Spring native, died Saturday in Lancaster.
Services will be 2 p.m. Monday at First Baptist Church of China Spring, the Rev. Jim Gray and the Rev. Steve Hudson officiating. Burial will be at China Spring Cemetery.
Mr. Talbert ws born Dec. 26, 1912 in China Spring.
He attended Waco schools. He married Maurine Garrett on Dec. 24, 1934 in Waco; she died Nov. 25, 1993. Mr. Talbert owned and operated Talbert’s Garage in China Spring and also had a dairy business and lumber yard in China Spring. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he served as deason and taught Sunday School. He served as a Royal Ambassador leader and training union director and worked with 4H. He designed the First Baptist Church, including its steeple. In 1962 he moved to Macon, Miss., where he was a farmer and a dairy man. They moved back to Texas in March of 1993.
Survivors include two daughters, Paula Mars of Eddy and Melody Talbert of Oak Leaf; son, John Talbert III of Josephine; three sisters, Annie Pearl Payne of China Spring, Texas Dorris of Dallas and Bea Grijalva of California; two brothers, Bryon Talbert of China Spring and C.O. Talbert of Crawford; and a great-grandchildren.
