Charles W. Baker, rancher and son of a Central Texas pioneer, died at 5:30 a.m. December 25, 1968 in a Clifton hospital. He was 72 years of age.
Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. December 26 in the China Spring Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Finley and Rev. Billy Mac Patteson officiating. Burial was in China Spring Cemetery under direction of Krueger Funeral Home.
Mr. Baker was a World War I veteran. In 1939 he was awarded the Carnegie Medal of Heroism for saving a teenage girl from drowning. The deed happened as she was swimming at a campsite known as Baker Shoals on the North Bosque River.
He had been a member of the China Spring School Board and was a member of the China Spring Methodist Church.
Survivors are his wife; one son, Bob R. Baker of LaMarque; two daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Jo Ann) Mitchell of Valley Mills, and Mrs. Wayne (Agatha) Poe of Wortham; three brothers, R. V. Baker of Valley Mills, Ben Baker of Waco and John Baker of Anson; and eight grandchildren.
Pallbearers were A.H. Garrett, David Miller, Don Stier, Kenneth Brown, Billy Joe Sparkman and Charles Ferguson.
