James W. Brooks, 78, of Hewitt, was called home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, December 16, 2014. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, December 19, 2014, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel. Services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, December 20, at Wilkirson-Hatch-Bailey Chapel with Pastor Robert Buchanan officiating. Burial will follow in China Spring Cemetery.

James was born in Waco, Texas, to the late Lillie Ruth and Charlie E. Brooks. He was a member of the Waco Community until he joined the U.S. Army at 17. James served for three years and came back home where he joined the Waco Fire Department. He served as a professional fire fighter for 35 years and was proud to be a part of the fire department family. James married Wanda Cross, in 1960 and they moved to Hewitt in 1979, where they attended Crossroads Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Rose Powell.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Wanda; daughters, Dolores Haferkamp and husband, David, and Sharon Montigny and husband, Dwayne; grandchildren, Joshua Cole and wife, Lacy, and Lindsay Holle; brothers, Henry Brooks and wife, Elaine, of Mansfield, Texas, and Joe Brooks and wife, Judy, of Austin; sisters-in-law, Jean Patrick and husband, Ralph, and Joyce Thiele and husband, Dan; and numerous nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends.
