James E. Carpenter, 76, of China Spring died at 2:35 p.m. Sunday in a Waco hospital.

Funeral services were to be at 4 p.m. today at China Spring Methodist Church, Rev. Jim Sander and Rev. Charles Rice officiating, burial in China Spring Cemetery.

Mr. Carpenter was born in Bosque County near Valley Mills. He was educated in Bosque County schools and came to China Spring in 1906.

He was employed by the state prison system for 10 years before going to work for the M-K-T Shops in Waco in 1944. He retired in 1962 after an accident.

Mr. Carpenter had been a member of China Spring Methodist Church since 1916. He married Lucy Maury in 1918 in Waco.

Survivors are his wife; one sister, Mrs. Kari Hoffmann; two brothers, E. A. Carpenter of Rosenthal and Marvin Carpenter of Long Beach, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.
