Peggy Clare Satterfield, 71, passed away Nov. 18, 2008, at a local nursing center.

Her ashes will be buried in the China Spring Cemetery in China Spring, with a graveside service for immediate family. A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, with reception to follow at the Lake Shore Funeral Home Chapel in Waco, with Dr. David Shuttlesworth officiating.

Peggy Clare was born in Nueces County, Texas, to C. C. “Son” and Mary Lou (Clare) Thornton. Soon thereafter her family moved to Liberty, Texas. She married Louis Satterfield on Sept. 8, 1962, in Liberty. She and Louis lived in Houston until 1969, when they moved back to Liberty. In 2001, Peggy was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, and in 2005, moved to the Crestview Nursing Home in Waco, where she lived until her death.

Peggy graduated from Baylor University, cum laude, with a B.A. degree in 1958 and received her J.D. degree from Baylor Law School in 1960. Following her graduation from law school and the successful passing of the bar exam, she was a briefing attorney for the Texas Supreme Court (Justice Zollie Steakley) (1961-1962), and a law clerk for Ben C. Connally, Chief Judge of the Federal District Court, Southern District of Texas (1962-1963). She was in the private practice of law in Houston (1963-1975), a senior trust officer with a major Houston bank (1975-1977), and a tax attorney in the head office of Shell Oil Company (1977-1984). During the period of 1984-1986, she attended the University of Houston to obtain the requisite study for the CPA license, which she obtained in 1988.

For nearly 50 years, she was active in the First Baptist Church of Liberty, where she taught Sunday school classes, participated in several foreign mission trips, and wrote and taught various special Bible studies. She was a member and past president of the Liberty Trivium Club. Peggy Clare was a wonderful, loving and caring wife and mother. She was a confidante, an encourager and truly our best friend. She will be missed deeply, but we rejoice in the sure knowledge that she is now in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and that there is no more weeping, pain or suffering.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents.

Survivors include her husband, Louis Satterfield; her daughter, Clare Paul and husband, Robert; grandchildren, Joseph and Elisabeth; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins.
