  • Lois Ione Stromberg (nee Zahn) transitioned to the hereafter on Thursday, June 15, at the home of her daughter C. L. Smith, Ocala, Florida. She was 96.

 

Born in Lomira, WI, she was the sixth and last child born to William A. & Julia A. Zahn (nee Guell). Lois graduated from Fond du Lac High School in Fond du Lac, WI in 1939 and then attended the Oshkosh Teachers College in Oshkosh, WI. In 1942, upon having a change of heart about a teaching career, she began working as a telephone operator for the Wisconsin Telephone Company. Then on February 8, 1944, Lois answered to the call of duty and enlisted in the US Marine Corp in Chicago, Illinois. Upon completing training, she was stationed at the Marine Corps Air Station, Miramar, San Diego, California. She received an honorable discharge. In 1946 Lois was employed as a Civil Service worker in the war bonds department for the US Treasury Depot in Chicago, Illinois.

On May 1st 1948, she married the late Richard W. Stromberg, Sr. and they made their home in the Chicago area. It was here that their six children were born. Later the family moved to New Jersey. Then she and Richard moved, after his retirement to Texas. After Richard’s death in 1994, she moved backed to New Jersey/Pennsylvania and then a final move to Ocala, FL. She remained a homemaker and provided a nurturing and loving environment. Lois was a creative and crafty individual. Among her many interests, she enjoyed genealogy, puppet making and for a time supported the family by making and selling apple dolls. She studied the bible, was avid gardener and loved creating dollhouse miniatures and room boxes. More importantly, she was awesome mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She was preceeded in death by her five siblings Melvin Zahn, Ruth (Harold) Konz, Lucille (Elwood) Kastorff, Ahleen (Lester) Damm, William (Mildred) Zahn.

She will be so very missed by her surviving children C. L Smith of Ocala, FL; M. J. Stromberg of Oswego, NY; J. A. Poccia of Sandyston, NJ; R. W. Stromberg Jr. of Stanhope, NJ; S. J. Sutton of Denison, TX and S. R. Hayward of Ocala, FL; and by her nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Lois will be cremated and her remains will be interned in the China Spring Cemetery, China Spring, Texas, next to her husband in October. Arrangements entrusted with HIERS-BAXLEY FUNERAL SERVICES-Timber Ridge. Sentiments may be left online at www.hiers-baxley.com.
