The Rev. J. A. (Gussie) Thormal of Waco, a clergyman, died Thursday at a local retirement center. He was 89.

Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday at Western Heights Baptist Church, the Rev. Charles Dixon, Chaplain Curtis Holland and Royce Thornal officiating.  Burial will be in China Spring Cemetery.

The Rev. Thornal was born Feb. 16, 1906, in Bosqueville.  He attended school in China Spring and graduated from Waco High School.  He attended Baylor University and got a bachelor of arts degree in 1936.  He married Fannie Hill on July 3, 1932; she died may 19, 1992.  The Rev. Thornal was pastor of Oak Grove Baptist Church, China Spring, Hallsburg and Bethany Baptist Church.  He began pastoring in 1927 and retired in 1961.  He was a member of Western Heights Baptist Church.

Survivors include two sons, Royce Thornal of Canton and Charles Thornal of Waco; three sisters, Florence Hill of Waco, Cleo Holder and Gladys Holder both of Gholson; one brother, J. A. Chandler of Llano; four grandchildren. and three great-grandchildren.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Wilkirson-Hatch Funeral Home.
