Herbert L. Wallen, 69, of China Spring died Thursday morning at a Waco hospital.

Graveside services will  be at 3 p.m. Monday at China Spring Cemetery, the Rev. Delbert Taylor and the Rev. Norman Suggs officiating.

The family will receive visitors from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Cole Funeral Home in McGregor.

Mr. Wallen was born April 15, 1919, in Glasgow, Ky.  He was a maintneance supervisor for a commercial building.  While serving in the Army, he was wounded in France and received the Purple Heart and ETO Ribbon during World War II.  He was married to Vivian Oleta Slaughter May 17, 1969.  He was an employee for the Veterans Administration for 27 years, retiring 1981.  He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2148 and American Legion Post 121 in Waco, serving as commander four different times.  He was a member of the Game Warden Association and the First United Methodist Church in China Spring.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Peggy Cummings of Waco; four sons, Don Slaughter of Crawford, Robert Slaughter of Valley Mills, Dan Slaughter of Alaska and Ray Slaughter of Fort Worth; a sister, Mrs. June Smiley of Cayuga, Ind; a brother, George Wallen of Danville, Ill.; 18 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

The family has designated First United Methodist Church in China Spring for memorials.
