Mrs. Martha Jane Whitfield, 74, of China Spring, died in a local hospital at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at the China Spring Baptist Church, Rev. W. P. Jones officiating, burial in China Spring Cemetery.

Survivors: one step-son, Will Whitfield of Gilliam, La,; four daughters, Mrs. Minnie Lee Weaver and Mrs. Earnest Allen, both of Waco, Mrs. Zola Yankie of China Spring and Mrs. Tom Rogers of Erath; one brother, J. M. Franklin, of San Antonio; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Active pallbearers; L. S. Sapp, T. P. Garrett, Buddy Thomas, Ben H. Roberts Jr., Stafford Garrett and Ernest Wallace.

Honorary pallbearers:  All friends of China Spring and Erath Communities.

Mrs. Whitfield had been very active in both the China Spring and Erath Baptist Churches for many years.  She supervised the Red Cross sewing room at China Spring during World War I.
